Altitude has been a talking point in sport for decades. What has changed is the precision: you no longer need weeks in an alpine valley to work with less oxygen.
Three methods, three logics
The classic is live high, train low: sleep at altitude, train at sea level. Then there is training in hypoxia — real effort in oxygen-reduced air. And finally IHHT, which is the opposite of effort: intervals at rest, hypoxia and hyperoxia alternating.

In sport, IHHT competes with sleep and decent food. Those two win almost every time.
How to fit it into a plan
Treat it like any other load: planned, logged, evaluated. In intense blocks it can work as a quiet stimulus; in pre-season, as a steady series across several weeks.
- Never introduce it during competition week.
- Series of four to six weeks, two to three sessions a week.
- Log sleep, resting heart rate and perceived exertion.
